CONTROVERSIAL: George Zimmerman
THE DEFENSE team for George Zimmerman have released a photo of their client with severe facial injuries, which was allegedly taken on the night he shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.
The 28-year-old’s lawyers reportedly said the graphic picture, which shows him with a swollen and bloodied nose, was snapped in a police car shortly after the ‘neighbourhood watchman’ had a confrontation with the 17-year-old in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, on February 26.
Zimmerman’s defense also said they intend to publish the rest of what they have described as new evidence “as soon as we are sure it has been properly redacted.”
However several news outlets have claimed that the image is in fact a higher quality version of a grainy, black and white photo that was released by the Florida State Attorney's Office in May.
Zimmerman, who has been charged with second-degree murder, recently made headlines after he announced that he will be sending personal ‘thank you’ cards to anyone who donates to his defense fund.
The news also comes after another black teenager was shot and killed in Florida, this time by a 45-year-old white businessman following a row over loud music, it has been claimed.
Early reports say that 17-year-old Jordan Davis was hit at least twice by bullets fired from Michael Dunn's gun outside a convenience store in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jordan's mother, Lucia McBath, said she doesn't want her son's death to be treated as a hate crime.
KILLED: Jordan Davis
She told Global Grind: “We don't know where he [Dunn] was or what kind of dark place place he was in at that moment but something snapped in that man. Something snapped in him, so we are not looking at it as a hate crime because that's not going to honour Jordan."
