Newsreader reps cancer charity in mum's memory

HONOURED: ITN newsreader Charlene White wants to raise awareness over the disease that touched her own life

ITN NEWSREADER Charlene White has become the new patron of Bowel Cancer UK after losing her mum to the disease.

In 2002, White’s mother passed away after years of suffering following a diagnosis of bowel cancer.

She is now proud to back the leading charity that saves lives through raising awareness of the disease.

White, of Blackheath, south London said: "Becoming a patron for the charity means a lot to me. I lost my mother to bowel cancer when I was 21, after quite a few years of illness - so I am passionate about the issues and the charity.

She hopes to get the nation taking more notice of the illness that claims around 16,250 lives each year.

It is estimated that someone dies from bowel cancer every 30 minutes.

White believes that small changes can make all the difference and ultimately save the lives of those with the illness.

"That's why more people need to learn to spot the signs early as it's highly treatable. I know we're constantly told that we should be eating healthily, but simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can save your life," she added.

The announces coincides with Ethnic Minorities Cancer Awareness week (EMCAW) which runs between July 11 to 17.

Miss White's as lovely inside as out. Your mum would be proud of you. Good on you for speaking up. Inspirational! Think it's funny how sometimes you see someone and have no idea what could be going on in someone's life.
