Nigerian powers her way to Paralympic silver medal

SUCCESS: Latifat Tijani

NIGERIAN WEIGHTLIFTER Latifat Tijani has won the country’s first medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Tijani won silver women’s -45kg Powerlifting.

She lifted 101 Kg to temporarily hold the Paralympic record before eventual gold medalist China’s Dandan Hu lifted 102 to break her record.

Hu also set a new record of 107 kg after Tijani failed in her attempt at 104kg. Great Britain’s Newson Zoe won Bronze.

Nigeria made its Paralympic Games début at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. It sent a delegation of six male athletes to compete in track & field, powerlifting and table tennis. Adeoye Ajibola won two gold medals in sprint, while Monday Emoghawve obtained one in powerlifting.
