CHANGE: Fast food giant to give up 'inhumane' sow crates
MCDONALDS HAS asked its United States-based pork suppliers to provide plans by May to phase out the use of crates that confine pregnant sows.
The Humane Society of the United States is touting Monday's announcement as a major victory in its fight to stop the use of the stalls, they have argued are 'inhumane'.
In a joint statement released yesterday by McDonald's and the Humane Society, the fast food chain claimed suppliers have already created plans to eradicate use of the controversial stalls, and hope the rest will follow suit.
McDonald's spokesman, Dan Gorsky, reportedly named suppliers, 'Smithfield Foods and Cargill' in making progress to adopt alternatives to the stalls.
