No Wasting Time, Says Portia

POWER: Jamaica's newly elected PM Portia Simpson Miller

With the general election now over Prime Minister-designate Portia Simpson Miller says her administration will be pressing forward with plans to create economic and social opportunities for Jamaicans.

In her New Year’s address to the nation, Mrs Simpson Miller outlined that the new People’s National Party (PNP) administration will be focusing on energy and information and communication technology as key sectors to drive economic growth.

She says although the country is still faced with a serious economic crisis, a national action will be needed to create employment and generate wealth.

Mrs Simpson Miller also emphasised that her government will lead efforts for positive social transformation, stressing that participation, accountability and responsibility will be significant hallmarks of these efforts.

She says her administration is committed to consultative and inclusive leadership and called for stronger partnerships to achieve an authentic democracy, which, she says, must be people oriented.

Mrs Simpson Miller also called for Jamaicans to recommit to the national motto: ‘Out of Many, One People” and urged people to move quickly beyond the elements which divide them.

She says Jamaicans must work together to achieve the objectives and goals outlined in the Vision 2030 Development Plan for Jamaica.

Last Thursday, Mrs Simpson Miller led the PNP to landslide victory over the incumbent Jamaica Labour Party, claiming 41 of the 63 seats in a preliminary count. The official count yesterday has increased the PNP's seat count to 42.
