Nude underwear brand Nubian Skin branches out to the States

COLOUR MATCH: Nubian Skin lingerie and hosiery caters for women of colour

A BRITISH underwear brand catering for the needs of darker skinned women has branched out to the United States.

Last year a new lingerie brand, Nubian Skin, caused a joyous frenzy among the back community when it launched a range of nude underwear and hosiery for women of colour.

The online London-based company is already sold at Fenwicks department store in the UK, and is also available in Nigeria and Portugal. And now, US customers can get their hands on the products.

The US department store, Nordstrom recently started selling two different types of Nubian Skin’s bras and pants, with plans to gradually expand their selection.

US customers are still able to order the full Nubian Skin range online on the company's site, but face waiting up to three weeks for for their items to be shipped across the pond.

For years, women of colour were forced to wear ill-matched nude underwear because the industry just simply did not cater for different skin tones.

Last year, Nubian Skin founder Ade Hassan told The Voice: "A nude bra [and] skin-tone tights are basics of every woman’s wardrobe. But my nude isn’t the nude I see in shops."

Like her fellow black female peers, Hassan was constantly disappointed by the lack of flesh-toned underwear and hosiery for darker skinned women.

But rather than passively complain, Hassan used her frustration as motivation for building her own lingerie and hosiery line dedicated to darker skin tones

Hassan added: “Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women, when it comes to lingerie and hosiery the industry simply doesn’t cater to us."

Nubian Skin launched last autumn and the brand already has high-profile following including Scandal star Kerry Washington and British actresses Thandie Newton and Beverly Knight.
