RISE: 'Number of mosques in US on the rise'

THE NUMBER of mosques in the US has risen by about 75 percent in the last decade, according to a new study.

The research, which was conducted by a number of Muslim groups and the University of Kentucky, indicated that there are now 2,106 Islamic centers, compared with 1,209 in 2000 and 962 in 1994.

The report, titled, The American Mosque 2011, also discovered a slight increase in the percentage of Muslims in the US from West Africa and Somalia.

Ihsan Bagby, Professor at the University of Kentucky and chief author of the study, claims the information illustrates that Muslims are 'carving out a place for themselves' in American society, after facing backlash from terrorist attacks on the country in 2001.

Bagby told BET: “This is a growing, healthy Muslim community that is well integrated into America.”

He added: “I think that is the best message we can send to the world and the Muslim world in particular.”
