'TRAGEDY': Obama sends 'prayers' to Whitney Houston's family

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has said that his 'thoughts and prayers' are with Whitney Houston’s family, following her shock death on Saturday.

In a statement released by the White House yesterday press secretary, Jay Carney, reportedly said it is 'hard not to be an admirer of the singer’s immense talent', before calling the late star's death a 'tragedy'.

The I Will Always Love You singer was declared dead in her fourth-floor room in the Beverly Hills Hotel at 3:55 pm, the eve of one of music’s biggest night, The Grammy awards.

Gossip website TMZ reported that prescription drugs were found in the star's room in the Beverly Hilton Hotel with initial speculation rife that Whitney may have drowned in a bathtub, although the cause of her death is still unconfirmed.

The six-time Grammy-winner’s death hit both her family and the music world hard, with celebrities from all over the world taking to Twitter to share their grief.

“I'm speechless...I'm in shock right now. Just pray for her and the family,” wrote the star’s godmother and singer, Chaka Khan.
