Obama's message to US football team: 'You did us proud'

PROUD: President Obama praised the US football team for their World Cup efforts

PRESIDENT BARACK Obama praised the efforts of the US football team at this year's World Cup in a special phone call to some of the players.

Despite the US being eliminated from the tournament by Belgium in a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday (July 2), Obama told goalkeeper Tim Howard and team captain Clint Dempsey they had "made the nation proud".

"To see the way you guys captured the hearts and the imaginations of the whole country is unbelievable," Obama said.

His comments follow what has been the country's best-ever World Cup display.

According to reports in the America, the match against Belgium averaged 16.49 million viewers on ESPN, making it the second most-watched men’s World Cup telecast ever in the States - behind USA-Portugal last month (18.2 million).
