Officers charged following Kingsley Burrell custody death

CUSTODY DEATH: Kingsley Burrell

THREE POLICE officers have been charged with perjury and perverting the course of justice following the custody death of 29-year-old Kingsley Burrell in 2011.

The father-of-three had been out walking with his young son when he called police because he feared he was about to be attacked by a group of men.

He was arrested and taken to the city's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he died within 72 hours after being detained under the Mental Health Act.

Last May, after a six-week inquest, a jury concluded that 'neglect and delays by health staff with prolonged restraint by police' all contributed to his death.

The officers, who are all based at the Birmingham West and Central police station, will appear at the city's magistrates court on October 31.

"After investigation by the IPCC, the matter was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions who has authorised the charges," it said in a statement.

The trainee security guard's family, who have held several protests demanding answers over his death, said the decision had been "a long time coming".

"The Burrell family welcome today's decision to prosecute the three officers concerned, in the belief that they must be publicly held to account for their actions in the circumstances surrounding the death of Kingsley," it said in a statement.

"This has been a long time coming and the fight for Justice for Kingsley continues."
