Oklahoma University fraternity closed over racist video leak

SHUT DOWN: The University of Oklahoma fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) has been closed after a racist video was leaked

VIDEO FOOTAGE showing members of an American university fraternity chanting racial slurs about black people is being investigated by police.

The national headquarters for Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) is closing its division at the University of Oklahoma (OU) after the offensive clip surfaced yesterday (March 8).

Members can be heard saying “there will never be a ni**** in SAE” and “you can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me”.

SAE's national office called the video "inappropriate" and said it was "disgusted" by its members’ behaviour.

The office has suspended all of the chapter's members and threatened to remove those responsible from the fraternity for life.

"I was not only shocked and disappointed but disgusted by the outright display of racism displayed in the video," SAE National President Bradley Cohen said in a statement.

The university president David Boren took to Twitter to condemn the video and warned that “if OU students are involved, this behaviour will not be tolerated and will be addressed very quickly,"

He also confirmed that the fraternity chapter would be banned from the campus.

"This behaviour is reprehensible and contrary to all of our values," he said.

In a full statement released from SAE headquarters, the fraternity said: “We are embarrassed by this video and offer our empathy not only to anyone outside the organisation who is offended but also to our brothers who come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.”

Since the release of the video, the SAE fraternity house has been vandalised and OU black student group, Unheard, released a statement describing the video as “offensive, disrespectful and unacceptable."

The timing of the incident coincided with the 50th anniversary of the march to Selma.

"We still have a reason to march," said the group’s spokesperson.
