Olympic spotlight: Ashley McKenzie

GRAPPLER: McKenzie (right)

THE JUDOKA competes in the lightweight division and is one of Britain’s best hopefuls for a judo medal at London 2012.

Having started his judo journey aged 11, the north Londoner has won numerous tournaments abroad, most notably the World Cup in Poland last year and a European Under-23 gold in 2010.

The last British Olympic judo medal was a silver medal claimed by Kate Howey at the 2000 Sydney Games but competing in front of a home crowd could cause McKenzie and the rest of the Team GB to change that fact.

The Mckenzie factfile:

Age: 22

Event: Judo

Honours: 2007 European Junior Championships bronze medallist
2009 European Under-23 Championships bronze medallist

2010 Senior British Open gold medallist

2011 World Cup gold medallist
2011 GB World Cup gold medallist

Prospects: Could possibly capture a bronze medal
