ONE TO WATCH: From Above
WITH BACKING from Matthew Knowles, the genius behind the success of Destiny's Child, it is no suprise that UK girl group From Above are ones to watch.
The Voice caught up with the five-piece sensation to talk MTV reality shows, angels, and Beyonce collaborations.
How did you guys get together?
We were all found from previous things we had done. Daisy – S club juniors, Chelsey and Ashley – were on dance x, Monique was from a Kanye tour, and Seyi as she was bought on board to help with songs and vocals - and we insisted she join us in the band!
What's the meaning behind 'From Above'?
The meaning behind the name From Above comes from the idea that, 'Angels' come from above, Anything that's 'out of this world' is usually referred to as coming 'from above' and blessings' are also thought to come from above.
We believe that our friendship and very un common relationship are all of these things/meanings. Whatever it is we have found in each other could have only come 'From Above'.
How would you say your career has been going so far?
I’d say our career is going great so far. It's been a slow progression but has always been moving in the right direction.
We supported Beyonce on tour in 2009 and had a great time. But now with our TV show airing on MTV internationally , presenting an award at the EMA's and the recent digital release of our debut single 'Not The Same Girl' we are over the moon with it all.
Who are some of your musical inspirations?
Destiny's Child are a huge inspiration to us, we love their vocal harmonies and longevity and aim to hit the world by storm just like the spice girls.
Currently you would find Rihanna, Chris Brown, Jessie J and a bit of Lady GaGa on our iPods.
There aren’t an abundance of girl bands enjoying prominence at the moment. Do you feel you can fill that void?
Yeah, definitely, we hope to fill that void. We've been together for several years and now are ready to release.
We believe we have a strong album that has something for everyone, it’s has a little bit of pop, dance, and some slower ballads, all our songs are lyrically driven and have a hard hitting beat that'll get you singing and dancing.
Many recent girl bands that have been formed on reality TV shows like X Factor, what do you think of that?
Well one has been successful (Little Mix), and we like them... we even voted for them!
What would you girls be doing if you weren’t doing music?
Something within or around the industry. We have all come from an performing background weather that be singing, dancing or song writing, so it's all we know and would want to ever do.
You all have been filmed by MTV what was it like having cameras around you constantly?
At first having cameras record our every move was a little surreal, I don't think any of us were very comfortable to begin, but as time went on our heads were solely in the game and having cameras there were the least of our worries, we just wanted to get through Mathew Knowles star power boot camp better and stronger and as the original 5.
Matthew Knowles is the brainchild behind Destiny's child, how does it feel to work with someone with so much success?
Honoured. It's amazing to know that he supports and believes in us, and it's great to learn from him.
Can we expect any Beyonce collabs soon?
We hope so. Watch this space!
What are your hopes for the future?
Happiness and global success. We hope to have number one hit singles, platinum album sales and sold out tours all over the world.
The single ‘Not the Same Girl’ is out on the 22nd January.
