Oprah rumoured to buy LA Clippers

MEDIA MOGUL and Hollywood actress Oprah Winfrey could become the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers after its disgraced owner Donald Sterling was forced to sell his share in the club because of racist comments he made about black people.

Media reports have linked the chat show queen to purchasing the NBA club, as have a host of other well-known celebrities and sports stars, including boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Oprah, who runs her own TV network and has a number of other business and charity interests, is one of the world’s richest women and possesses more than enough finances to complete a deal to buy the basketball side.

Earlier this week, a recording of Sterling was posted on website TMZ in which he was heard telling his girlfriend not to associate herself with black people after she posted images of herself with black friends on social, including an image with former NBA star Magic Johnson.

The remarks sparked outrage in the world of basketball and further afield, with US president Barack Obama condemning the comments.

The NBA was praised for acting swiftly on Tuesday (Apr 29) when it announced is enforcing a lifetime ban on Sterling from attending league games and training sessions, while also forcing to sell his stake in the Clippers.

Sterling was fined $2.5m (£1.5m), the maximum amount, for the remarks.

He admitted it was his voice in the recording but claimed the views expressed do not reflect his own.
