ZAMBIA: The crash happened 60 miles north of Lusaka
ZAMBIA POLICE say at least 51 people are believed to have been killed when a lorry and bus crashed into each other at high speed north of the country’s first city.
Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said the death toll could increase because rescue services are still searching for those trapped in the wreckage.
However, Harry Kalaba, a government official, said: 53 people have been counted among the dead. “I can confirm that 53 people have died in the accident,” he told AFP at the crash site, which is 60 miles north of Lusaka.
“Some bodies are still trapped under the truck but we called for a crane to lift the truck”, he added.
It is reported the bus belonged to the Zambia Postal Service and was travelling towards the capital.
Local reports suggest as many as 70 people were onboard the bus, but the exact figure remains unconfirmed.
Badly maintained and overloaded vehicles are not rare in Zambia, and this accident appears to be one of the worst in the country’s history.
