Pele gives a lion a boost

ICON: Pele with the World Cup

BRAZIL LEGEND Pele has told the media that he would love to have England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in his national team.

Rooney has scored 39 goals for the Three Lions, ten behind record scorer, Bobby Charlton. Ironically, he is yet to score in a World Cup after featuring in both the South Africa and Germany tournaments.

The end of the Premier League campaign was a difficult one for the former Everton man, as he suffered niggling injuries which put him out of action.

Pele told Sky Sports News: “Wayne Rooney has not scored [in a World Cup finals] but he was fantastic for the team. He was always the player who fought more for the team - I would like him in my team, you know!”

Pele, a three-time World Cup winner, expects England to progress from their group, in which they will they face Costa Rica, Italy and Uruguay.
