SHOT DEAD: Meyiwa on his final appearance before he was killed (PA)

EVERTON MIDFIELDER Steven Pienaar has paid tribute to South Africa captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa after he was shot dead.

Pienaar reflected on the tragic end to his compatriot’s life and was shocked to hear the news.

He said: “First of all, I want to express my sincere sympathy to Senzo’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“To lose your life at a young age when you have so much ahead of you is tragic and very difficult to understand.”

TRIBUTE: Pienaar (PA)

Pienaar added: “Senzo was a very talented goalkeeper who was well-liked by team-mates and opponents alike. Our nation has lost a popular sportsman and he will be missed.”

The 27-year-old Orlando Pirates keeper had been in action over the weekend for his club, before being shot yesterday (Oct 26). South African police said two armed men entered his girlfriend’s house, while a third man was seen outside the property in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg.

A reward has been issued for information leading to the arrest of the three suspects.
