Popular presenter finds her space

EVENT: Nikki Tapper

NIKKI TAPPER, one of the best loved voices within the West Midlands' African and Caribbean communities, is encouraging others to lend their voices to her evening of live music and conversation called In the Space.

It was first hosted by the popular BBC Radio WM broadcaster last year at the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) and proved to be such a hit that she is planning to organise several more this year.

“After working in local radio for the past 13 years and hosting events I have met so many fascinating people and made such a lot of connections that I decided to launch my own event to celebrate this,” said Smethwick-born Nikki, a qualified teacher, who pursued radio presenting in her early 30s.

“My first event last May went really well, so I am planning to hold four similar ones this year, if it all goes according to plan!”

The first In the Space of 2016 will be held on Friday January 29 at MAC at 8pm. Those in conversation with Nikki will include Raj Holness, the founder and director of Breaking the Silence, a project which supports victims of domestic abuse, forced marriages and human trafficking.

Also in the spotlight will be award winning saxophonist Millicent Stephenson and Errol Lawson, a former gangster turned pastor who has written a book on the gang lifestyle called From the Postcode to the Globe.

MOBO-nominated and award winning group Chosen will top the music bill, among several other artists.

“It’s all about coming to enjoy the chat, enjoy the music – come willing to participate,” added Nikki, who the voting public selected as the Best Presenter for the Midlands and North at the Oasis Music and Church awards 2006.

Her polished performances hosting a wide range of local events from awards nights to gala charity dinners have earned her respect and popularity across the region.

On BBC Radio WM Coventry & Warwickshire, she currently co-presents the African Caribbean current affairs programme Chatback on Sunday evenings with Dr Joe Aldred. Previously, she presented The Gospel Lounge for nine years, while also being involved with specials such as BBC Sport Relief, Children in Need and the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
