Premier hosts football summit

VENUE: No.10 Downing Street hosted today's summit on discrimination in football

THE PRIME Minister today has stepping into the row over discrimination in football by holding a Downing Street summit involving key figures from the game.

David Cameron - along with the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt - hosted a discussion on divisive issues in the sport.
The FA chairman David Bernstein attended, along with leading figures from the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers' Association.

Commenting on today's Downing Street summit on discrimination in football, Chief Executive at the Women's Sports Foundation, Sue Tibballs, said: "It is very positive to see such high profile consideration of issues of discrimination in football but amongst these discussions it is important not to forget the sexist abuse suffered by women in football.

"The sexist remarks aimed at female officials from fans (and sometimes managers and media commentators) is completely unacceptable.

"Studies show that one of the reasons girls in this country are less active than boys is because they are put off by the sexist environment.

"Ending this hidden discrimination in football should be at the top of the agenda, along with kicking out racism and homophobia."
