Protests after white policeman kills unarmed black teen

SHOT: Tony Robinson (pictured with his mother) was killed by a police officer last week

AN UNARMED black teenager was shot dead by a white police officer at the end of last week in Wisconsin.

Tony Robinson, 19, died Friday night (Mar 6) after being shot in his apartment following a confrontation with officer Matt Kenny, 45, who had forced his way inside after hearing a disturbance while responding to a call, according to reports.

A struggle had ensued in the seconds before the shooting, it is reported. The officer then performed CPR on Robinson and the teen was rushed to hospital.

He later succumbed to his injuries.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said Kenny was injured, but didn't provide details.

"He was unarmed. That's going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public to accept," Koval said of Robinson.

The department said Kenny would not have been wearing a body camera.

The killing prompted protesters on Saturday (Mar 7) to take to the streets with chants of "Black Lives Matter".

The shooting comes days after the US Justice Department said it would not issue civil rights charges against Darren Wilson, the white former Ferguson, Missouri, officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black and unarmed, after a struggle in the street.
