QPR tell Ferdinand to shake Terry’s hand

SPECULATION: Ferdinand

QUEENS PARK Rangers are set to hold talks with Anton Ferdinand this week to encourage him to shake hands with Chelsea captain John Terry.

There has been much speculation ahead of the teams’ FA Cup fourth round meeting on Saturday (January 28) that Ferdinand will refuse to acknowledge Terry, who is set to appear in court next Tuesday (January 31) for allegedly racially abusing the defender.

QPR fear that if Ferdinand rejects Terry’s handshake, it could intensify what is already expected to be an explosive atmosphere.

It is FA Cup protocol for players to shake hands before a game and it is understood that the England captain will extend his hand during the pre-match formalities.

The match will be the first time that the pair have come face-to-face since the infamous Premier League game at Loftus Road on October 23 when the incident is said to have happened.

This is not the first time that Terry has been involved in a handshake controversy. Two years ago, when Manchester City took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Wayne Bridge refused to accept the gesture after it was revealed that Terry had an affair with the left-backs former partner.

The FA are keen for the pair to shake hands and allow the courts to deal with the matter.

QPR are expected to relay this message to Ferdinand during a meeting this week and they hope that it will be a step towards diffusing any tensions that could cause crowd trouble during the fierce west London derby.
