Review: Kia Cee'd GT

CAR OF THE WEEK: Kia Cee’d MY16 1.6 Petrol T-GDi GT (price: £20,580)

COMPARED TO the regular Cee’d, the GT gets re-tuned springs and dampers and a thicker rear anti-roll bar. The front suspension bushes are stiffer to sharpen steering response and reduce body roll, while there’s an independent set-up on the rear axle.

The 18in alloy wheels and 225/40 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres are the largest of any Cee’d model, while the standard car’s adjustable electric power steering has been ditched for one, more direct setting.

The Cee’d GT comes with Kia’s industry-leading seven-year/ 100,000-mile warranty – a vote of confidence in the car’s reliability and reassurance for buyers that if something goes wrong, they won’t have to fork out for repairs.

The Kia Cee’d GT was rated highly for reliability in a recent satisfaction survey of cars currently on sale in the UK.

Safety-wise, the standard Cee’d achieved a five-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash-testing, so the GT should perform well if you’re ever involved in a crash.

Kia’s latest Cee’d GT is the second generation of the car that projected the Korean brand into the mainstream. It’s direct competition for big-selling small family hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra and aims to tempt buyers essentially through a mix of keen and affordable pricing.

The hook for potential purchasers is the seven-year/ 100,000 mile warranty which comes as standard on all new cars and can be transferred to subsequent owners.

I was genuinely excited when I saw the Cee’d GT. The design and shape is immaculate and it offers lots of interior space, while it’s stylish inside and out. It’s one of the most practical cars in its class, with a roomy, sporty GT interior.

The model range is smaller than those of many rivals. The GT model gives the Cee’d line-up a sporty flagship model, but value for money remains key to the car’s appeal and all versions are affordable to buy and run. Kia Cee'd models range from £15,175 onward.

If you’re in the market for a small family hatchback, with a kick, this one vehicle that should definitely be on your shortlist.
