DOREEN LAWRENCE SAYS MEGAN'S ETHNICITY SIGNALS TO ‘SIGNIFICANT MOMENT’

Baroness Doreen Lawrence has commended the royal wedding in part due to Meghan Markle’s heritage. Markle - whose mother is african american and father white - has spoken in the past about her experiences as a biracial woman and had to deal with some racism after her relationship with Prince Harry went public.

This resulted in Harry taking the rare step last year of publicly attacking the British press for introducing “racial overtones” into the reporting of their relationship.

In a discussion on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning, Doreen Lawrence, whose teenage son Stephen was murdered by racists 25 years ago, said Markle’s ethnicity made the wedding a significant moment.

She said: “It’s just really amazing for the country to have someone like her joining the royal family.”

Harry and Markle attended a memorial service last month to mark the 25th anniversary of Stephen’s mother, which shocked Britain and led to the Metropolitan police being described as institutionally racist.

But Candice Carty-Williams, whose debut novel Queenie centred on the story of a 25-year-old black woman living in London, said the marriage did not represent a symbolic change on race.

She said: “Meghan is a white-passing mixed race woman who has light skin and very European features and very straight hair.

So, if that’s the closest they are coming day to day with a person of colour, then that’s not me, that’s not people like me.”
