Rwandan choreographer picks up VMAs for 'This Is America'

RWANDAN-BORN dancer and choreographer Sherrie Silver picked up Childish Gambino's awards during MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) in New York City.

Silver choreographed the poignant music video This Is America, which has gained praised and international acclaim for the dancer and the video has gained over 370,000,000 views to date.

Gambino's music video picked up three awards including best video with a message, best choreography and best direction.

Silver picked up the award and thanked the musician for the opportunity.

"Thank you everyone! Thank you @MTV @vmas and @donaldglover and the whole team @WolfandRoth, @MuraiHiro!," she wrote on Twitter. "We won 3 awards including Best Choreography, Best Direction and Video with a Message #Vmas"

Speaking to Interview Magazine about the iconic video, Silver said that she blended a number of American and African dance moves, such as Nigeria's Shaku Shaku and the Azonto from Ghana.

The VMA's also saw other black artists win big, including Nicki Minaj who took home 'Best Hip Hop' video for Chun Li, Beyonce and JAY-Z who won 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Art Direction for APES**T.
