ENGLAND NETBALL and Hertfordshire Mavericks centre player Sasha Corbin, says it’s an honour to captain the Roses at the Netball Open championships, which began today and end on October 8.

The seasoned 29 year-old England international and the rest of the team are seeking to defend their title against hosts Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and Fiji.

Corbin said:

“It’s an absolute honour to be leading the team, especially alongside both Nat Haythornthwaite and Nat Panagarry. It’s a fantastic team.

"We’re looking forward to playing against our home nations and coming together as new combinations and hopefully there’ll be a few girls getting their first caps for England. Hopefully we do what we normally do and come away with some strong wins.”

The Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia is fast approaching next year. With this in mind, many of the England squad want their performances to impress.

Corbin commented further:

“It’s great to have everyone here doing what they do – the main thing is everyone’s pushing for those positions. It’s not set yet – no one knows who’s going on that plane to the Commonwealth Games and it’s a fantastic opportunity for the young people to come through.”

For Corbin, cousin of silver medallist sprinter Asha Phillip, pulling on the red dress and representing your country would be especially significant - the England Captain suffered a knee injury last year. She said:

“I’ve come away from having some serious injuries in the past – I did my ACL and haven’t played for England for almost two years.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to play with these young girls that are coming through and they’re just so talented and I can’t wait to put my best foot forward for them.”

The International Federation event, takes place at the Sport Wales National Centre. The tournament is available to watch via the BBC Sport app, online and connected TV.
