Serena eyes US Open

EVOLVING: Serena Williams

AFTER MISSING nearly a year of competitive tennis because of injuries and health problems, American tennis ace Serena Williams she is slowly but surely getting back to her best.

With the US Open just weeks away, the former world number one said: “I definitely want to get better. I would hate to be Grand Slam ready right now seeing as the US Open is not right now so I'll try to peak at the right time."

The 13-times Grand Slam winner added: "I'm definitely a lot healthier obviously than I have been before and I am not using as much energy as I used to. Maybe I have evolved."

Williams wants to reclaim her status as the dominant force in women's tennis and the 29-year-old American has decided expending less energy while on the court could be the key.

Williams’ rehabilitation took a positive step with a recent tournament success. She leapt 90 places in the world rankings after winning her first title in over a year at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, defeating Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 to lift her first title on American soil since the 2009 US Open.
