Serena Williams gets online backlash for rape comments

OUTSPOKEN: Serena Williams

TENNIS ACE Serena Williams has suggested that a 16-year-old rape victim put herself at risk.

An intoxicated teenager was raped by high school American footballers Trent Mays and Ma’Lik Richmond in Steubenville, Ohio.

In March, the two males were found guilty by a US court and ordered to serve a year in juvenile detention.

During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the reigning Wimbledon champion and recent French Open winner said the victim “shouldn’t have put herself in that position” and described her as “lucky.”

“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know,” she told the magazine.

“I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you - don’t take drinks from other people.

“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

The 31-year-old’s comments drew widespread criticism on social networking site Twitter.
