Seven-year-old drives to visit his father

STOPPED: Police officer attempts to open driver's door

A SEVEN-year-old boy was pulled over by police after driving 20 miles in an attempt to visit his dad.

The boy, who was barefoot and in his pyjamas when stopped, reached speeds of up to 50mph in his stepdad's red Pontiac Sunfire car as he tried to make the 12 mile journey to his father's home.

He took the car from the family home in Sheridan Township, around 100 miles north east of Detroit, Michigan, while his mum was asleep.

Two people who spotted him alerted police, who managed to stop him by boxing him in with other cars.

Witness Aaron Scott said: "I looked over to my left and saw a kid about 4ft tall, looked like he was about eight years old, driving by himself.

"He looked like he was standing up on the floormat barely touching the seat and hunched over the steering wheel."
Caseville Police Chief Jamie Learman said: "He was crying and just kept saying he wanted to go to his dad's.

"That was pretty much it: He just wanted to go to his dad's. I was hoping he wasn’t going to crash. I slowed down; he slowed down and eventually stopped.

"I'm just glad he didn't get hurt, and no one else got hurt," he said.
