Sex scandal claims against Moravian church are "unfounded"

STATEMENT OF DENIAL: Dr. Paul Gardner, former president of Jamaica's Moravian church

THE RESIGNED president of the Moravian Church in Jamaica Dr. Paul Gardner, has issued a statement calling recent allegations against him vile and unfounded.

According to Gardner, he remains committed to the church but has stepped aside from his duties to concentrate on clearing his name. Gardner resigned last Thursday, two days after a woman wrote to the bishops of the Moravian church raising damning allegations against him.

His deputy Jermaine Gibson against whom similar allegations were made also resigned.

Gardner's full statement:

"Last week, I tendered my resignation as president of the Moravian Church, the Teachers Services Commission and the Cooperative Credit Union Board, with immediate effect.

"I have been committed to a life of service to my church and my country which I always did with unquestioned integrity for more than 30 years.

"In that same vein, I stepped aside from my day to day administrative responsibilities to give the church room to fully investigate these vile and unfounded allegations circulating in the media, and to prevent any of these institutions from having to deal with the distraction that this issue presents.

"I intend, hereon, to concentrate on protecting and clearing my good name and ask that any questions be directed to my attorneys."
