Sextuplets born to couple trying to conceive for 17 years

PROUD PARENTS: Adebayo and Ajibola Taiwo

A VIRGINIA hospital has announced that their staff has successfully delivered sextuplets and the three boys and three girls are thriving.

The couple – Ajibola Taiwo and Adeboye Taiwo – are natives of Nigeria and had been trying to have children for 17 years.

In a statement from the VCU Medical Centre in Richmond, VA, they shared the news of the sextuplets births on Wednesday (May 24), saying they were the first sextuplets delivered at the hospital. The babies were born May 11.

The statement says a 40-person team was involved and the delivery – which was a C-section – required hours of planning.

For the couple, they learned they were pregnant with four babies in November, CBS affiliate WTVR reports. According to WTVR, it wasn't until they arrived at the Richmond hospital that they learned they were expecting sextuplets.

Sextuplets are considered quite rare. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, of the nearly 4 million live births in the U.S. in 2015, only 24 were quintuplets or other higher-order births.
