Shootout between masked gang and police in east London

THREE PEOPLE are in custody after a shootout took place in Forest Gate, east London.

Scotland Yard confirmed their capture after a vehicle chase which ended with shots fired at police.

Police returned fire and no suspects of police were injured.

Images and witness accounts have been shared across social media, with many showing images of armed police with a suspect on the ground and a black BMW 1 Series with broken shattered glass.

One Twitter user said: "Coming home after a long day at the hospital there’s been a shooting near my house, shots fired between police and mask men (from what I was told)"

Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “Police were called at approximately 10.45pm on Thursday, 26 July to Lascelles Close, E11 following reports of suspects seen in possession of a firearm. Officers, including firearms officers, attended.

"A short time later a vehicle was seen nearby which failed to stop for police and a pursuit was authorised. During the pursuit, a number of shots were fired towards officers.ies.

"Three people have been arrested on Bective Road, E7 on suspicion of attempted murder. They have been taken to an east London police station where they remain in custody.

"Officers and the National Police Air Service remain in the area. A crime scene is in place."
