Sixth formers learn rules of the ring

BOX READY: Pupils will be mentored in boxing and fitness

HARINGEY SIXTH Form Centre, in Tottenham, north London, has unveiled its ‘Inspire Boxing’ project – a collaboration with ‘Sky Sports Living for Sport’ – aiming to help better pupils’ attitude, attendance and confidence.

World class athletes who work with Sky Sports will become available to coach and mentor a host of boxing fitness training sessions to the 16 to 19-year-olds.

One such athlete is Hannah Beharry, a top UK female boxer who started off the project through giving a motivational talk accompanied by a team building exercise.

Some of the goals of the project are to get students healthier, better disciplined and more motivated to learn and achieve.

Pupils will also have the advantage of being mentored by Rod Douglas, an Olympic and Commonwealth games gold medallist, who also won four National Amateur Boxing Association titles. Participating students will visit Douglas’ gym for once-a-week sessions, and will be able to apply their newly acquired skills in sparring sessions too.
