Song comes second in Arsenal poll

RECOGNITION: Alex Song in action for Arsenal

MIDFIELD DYNAMO Alex Song has been voted second in the Arsenal Player of the Year poll for the 2011-12 season.

In what has been a topsy-turvy season for the north Londoners, Song’s work in the middle of the park and eye for a killer pass was one of the constants in his team's season, and has now been recognised by the fans.

His sixth season at the club has undoubtedly been his best, and proved manager Arsene Wenger’s faith in him to be correct. Some doubted the Cameroon international's talent as he struggled to gain consistency in his first few seasons with the Gunners.

His 14 assists last season have led to some crucial goals, not least Thierry Henry’s stunner against Leeds on his return to the club and van Persie’s last-minute volley against Liverpool.

Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said: “Sometimes you don't notice the stuff he does, the defensive side of the game, but he is always there cleaning up. He has been bringing assists to the team as well.

“Some of the passes he has been putting in remind me technically of watching [Cesc] Fabregas put those balls through. For a holding midfielder to do that, as well as the defensive side of the game, is brilliant. You can't ask for anything more.”
