NUMBER ONE: Rapper Dave's single Funky Friday has debuted at the top spot in the UK singles chart

UK RAPPER Dave has reached the top of the official UK singles chart for the first time with his single Funky Friday featuring Fredo.

Dave appealed to fans via social media earlier this week, urging them to support the single by buying it, streaming it on loop and sharing it with friends and family.

The 20-year-old announced that the song, his first release in more than six months, had scooped the Number 1 spot today.

He said: "Our first UK Number 1. Speechless. One of the best weeks of my life, I don’t have enough words to thank everyone who’s helped us get here and been a part of this. But this is for us. Not for me. For this country and the music that we’re making all the obstacles we’ve had to overcome. So happy. Thank you to everyone that was a part of this. I owe you for the rest of my life."

The rapper, whose song Question Time led him to become the youngest winner of the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song this year, has told fans that he won't make them wait so long for new music in future.

Fredo said: "Number 1 on the UK chart yo Santan Dave we just made history 100 [sic]. Thank you to everyone that made it possible you lot are really changing my life for the better everyday. I’m grateful, I want you to know."

Dave will embark on his first European tour next month. The seven-date tour will kick-off in Paris and finish in Amsterdam.
