Stoke eye up Tottenham’s Jermaine Defoe

DEADLY POACHER: Defoe celebrates another goal last season (PA)

STOKE CITY manager Mark Hughes could begin next season with a new look front two that have an old understanding between them.

It is reported that the new Potters boss is seeking to secure the transfer of Jermaine Defoe from Tottenham, a signing that would see the 30-year-old England striker link-up again with Peter Crouch – the pair played together at both Portsmouth and Spurs.

The Sunday People report that Hughes is willing to pay £6m to take Defoe to the Britannia Stadium.

An exit from White Hart Lane may be the best move for his career, as Tottenham coach Andre Villas-Boas is hoping to add to his attack, and the likes of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Valencia’s Roberto Soldado have been touted as potential targets.

Nonetheless, Defoe has two years to run on his £65,000-a-week contract, meaning any move north would either involve a pay-cut or Stoke making the diminutive forward their highest earner.

The prospect of Defoe partnering alongside Crouch could have Potters fans excited; the little and large combination proved effective over the years at Pompey and Spurs, which were both managed under Harry Redknapp at the time.

Also, Defoe and Crouch played together at international level for England.
