Street dance dreams come to life for London teenager

OVER THE MOON: Olivia Francis

ASPIRING DANCER Olivia Francis says she was over the moon when she got the call to be a part of the 2012 Serious About Street Dance showcase set to take place at London’s indigO2 this weekend.

The fledgling event, which will feature an exclusive performances from the finest in dance talent, including Britain’s Got Talent and Street Dance 3D stars, Flawless, World Hip Hop 2011 Champions, Plague UK and the Olivier Award-winning, Boy Blue Entertainment, was created by Nike Athlete, Kymberlee Jay and is in it’s fourth year.

Francis, 16, is the youngest participant of her dance group, Cube, just one of the 21 confirmed performances set to entertain on the night, but the confident teenager, who is also preparing for her GCSE’s, told The Voice that she is looking forward to taking part in her biggest challenge to date.

She said: “When I was told I could do the show I didn’t even know how big it was then other people started to tell me about it and that’s when it started sinking in. It will be the biggest show I’ve ever done and I am looking forward to it. I’m not nervous now but come the night when I am backstage that’s when the nerves will kick in.”

On their website, Serious about StreetDance boast to be ‘the ONLY live event to bring together over 200 of the finest performers, offering the chance for spectators to experience street dance like never before’.

TALENTED: Olivia with fellow dancers

For the first time this years showcase will also include an explosive £1000 crew (5 vs.5) street dance battle competition to crown the hottest battle crew in the UK.

Francis has been dancing since for as long as she can remember but began taking her craft seriously when she started to get recognised from music videos she had appeared in and competitions she had entered.

Her dream is to become as big as the industry allows her to be but despite the opportunities that are ahead, school comes first.

She said: “I’m rehearsing all the time but as well as that I am doing maths revision, English revision and everything else.

“For me, I have to get my schoolwork on point as well as my dance routines but I am managing fine so far.”
