Suicide bomber kills 46 students at Nigerian school

INJURED: Boys are treated in hospital following the blast (PA)

A SUICIDE bomber has killed at least 46 students at a school in the northeastern Nigerian town of Potiskum, reports indicate.

Local police said the bomber was dressed as a student before denoting the explosion at the Yobe state boys’ school.

No official responsibility has been taken for the blast, but it is believed Islamist militant group Boko Haram is behind the attack.

In a statement, Yobe state governor Ibrahim Gaidam said: “Urgent action must be taken right now to restore a fast-waning public confidence by doing whatever it takes to stop the escalating violence.”

Reports suggest the bomb exploded in the school’s assembly hall.

About 79 other people were injured in the blast that took place at 8am local time this morning.

Boko Haram, which caused an international uproar in April this year when it kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls, is fighting Nigerian forces to create its own Islamic state.

The militants are also seeking to ban girls from going to school and force boys to only experience an Islamic education.
