Tamgho to tackle Idowu in Birmingham

RIVALS: Tamgho (left) versus Idowu

THE WORLD’S leading triple jumper Teddy Tamgho has confirmed that he will compete in this Sunday’s (July 10) Diamond League in Birmingham against Britain’s world and European champion Phillips Idowu.

At last month’s Diamond League event in Lausanne, Switzerland, Tamgho bettered Idowu by leaping to a world leading mark of 17.91m which is just seven centimetres off his personal best.

The 22-year-old Parisian has won world and European indoor titles but Idowu beat Tamgho at both the world championships in 2009 and the European championships in 2010.

Idowu, 32, grew up in Hackney, east London but currently resides in Birmingham and will have hometown advantage at the Alexander Stadium.

Nevertheless Tamgho is relishing the opportunity to jump against Idowu in preparation for the world championships in Daegu, South Korea in August.

“I'm delighted to be competing at the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix against Phillips,” said Tamgho.

“I’ve always had great competition with him and it’ll be nice to compete against him in his own country.

“I'm feeling in great shape and was really pleased with the way I jumped in Lausanne. It was nice to beat Phillips, but I'm sure he’ll be desperate to come back and beat me in his home country, so if I'm going to win there, I’ll have to jump even further.

Tamgho continued: “I feel there’s plenty more to come from me, and I'm hoping to be jumping some big 18m jumps soon. I have it within me I'm sure, and hopefully I can do this in Birmingham.

“I won the world Indoor title last year and broke the world indoor record earlier this year in Paris, so it would be a dream couple of years if I could win the world championships in Daegu later this summer.

“But I know it’s going to be very tough and Phillips is going to be pushing me hard every step of the way.”
