Teenage prodigy sets the standard

GOING CLEAR: Johnson-Thompson

UK JUNIOR heptathlon record holder Katarina Johnson-Thompson set a personal best in the high jump, her second of the day.

The 19-year-old Liverpudlian cleared 1.89m for a new personal best on her second attempt, going further than her British compatriot Jessica Ennis.

Ennis’ best distance was 1.86m. Nevertheless her result was significantly better than her main rival Tatyana Chernova, who only cleared 1.80m.

Johnson-Thompson had previously equaled her personal best in the 100m hurdles, which was the first discipline of the heptathlon.

However, fellow Team GB heptathlete Louise Hazel unfortunately faltered, exiting the competition at 1.62m.

Lithuania’s Austra Skujyte was victorious in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.92m.

Sheffield native Ennis leads the standings with a points tally of 2,249 while Johnson-Thompson climbs to third with 2,146 points.
