Terrorist threat closes Nigerian university

CLOSED: University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital

A NIGERIAN university has shut down after receiving threats from a local terrorist group.

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, promptly shut its doors after militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, who oppose Western education and fight for Islamic rule, claimed they would target the campus in the northern city of Maiduguri.

In recent weeks, about 40 people have been killed in attacks blamed on the group and last month, it is believed the group bombed the police headquarters in Abuja, killing at least six people.

According to a BBC reporter in the area, Maiduguri residents are said to be afraid the military will carry out indiscriminate arrests in search for the bombers.
