Test fail: Sports minister Helen Grant fluffs impromptu quiz

RETAKE NEEDED: Helen Grant did not know who won the FA Cup and who claimed the women's Wimbledon title (PA)

SPORTS MINISTER Helen Grant was left embarrassed after she failed to answer any questions correctly in an impromptu sports quiz.

The Conservative MP’s series of gaffes included not knowing who won this year’s FA Cup and the name of the current Wimbledon women’s champion.

The humiliating exchange with ITV Merdian saw Grant asked who won the women’s title at the All England Club showpiece, and she replied: “It’s not one of us.

“I know Andy Murray did it for us, which is absolutely fantastic and that’s the important thing.” France’s Marion Bartoli was the winner.

Grant tried to cheat by seeking help from her adviser as she made a mess of all five of her questions.

The 52-year-old was then asked who the FA Cup holders were and, somewhat anxiously looking at her aide, Grant said: “Come on, help” before answering with “Manchester United because it’s my favourite club.”

The irony would not have been lost on football fans as most know if their team had won such a famous trophy. The correct answer was Wigan.

Afterwards she said: “I wasn’t told there was going to be a quiz thrown in at the end of an interview. If I’d know I would have done some proper revision.”
