Thandie Newton and David Haye named 'sexiest vegans'

FORMER WORLD Heavyweight champion David Haye and silver screen queen Thandie Newton have been named as the UK’s “sexiest” vegans.

The pair claimed the annual gong from animal rights group PETA in recognition of celebrities who promote “compassion for animals”.

Newton, 42, who has starred in Hollywood blockbusters such as Mission Impossible and The Chronicles Of Riddick, explained that one of the reasons for why she went vegan was how animals were treated in the meat industry.

“I don't want any kind of suffering of any living form”, the actress said.

“Animals are being pumped full of growth hormones which are then getting fed to our kids. And it's affecting the water, environment.”

For Haye the moment he decided to remove animal flesh from his diet was at the beginning of this year after watching a programme exposing the inner workings of farming and slaughterhouses.

The 34-year-old boxer, who claimed the WBO heavyweight title in 2012, said: “I watched a TV documentary about how animals are farmed, killed and prepared for us to eat.

“I saw all those cows and pigs and realised I couldn't be a part of it any more.

“It was horrible. I did some research to make sure I could still obtain enough protein to fight and, once satisfied that I could, I stopped.

“I'll never go back”, the Hayemaker added.

Previous recipients of the award include popstar Leona Lewis, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis and activist yogi Russel Brand.

Apart from gaining the kudos of receiving the award for promoting greater awareness about animal welfare and how a meat-and-animal-product-free diet can lead to better health, both Newton and Haye will be able to chow down on a special gift of vegan chocolates presented by PETA.
