Two London 360 reporters go head to head

NO
KRYSTINA MEENS
IF YOU are obese then it’s clear you have allowed your body fat to accumulate to the extent that it will now affect your life expectancy. Somewhere between being fat and being obese, you failed to look in the mirror and tell yourself to stop eating burgers and cake.
To be obese is to be selfish. A few weeks ago I gave up my seat to someone on the train who I believed to pregnant. She was huffing and puffing, so I immediately leapt from my place to offer it to her in her time of need.
As she sat I realised there was no baby on the way. This woman was just nursing too many takeaways. I was standing on a forty minute trip because this woman’s legs were buckling under the weight of her own body. This is unhuman!
She was as happy to take my seat as she will be to take my taxes when in a few year’s time her body surrenders to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
Scientists have concluded that the idea of genetics causing you to be overweight is a myth. Research conducted on 2000 people found that just small amounts of exercise would counteract any genetic pre-disposition to being fat. It really isn’t hard to spend a few minutes a day walking or simply taking the stairs.
We only need to turn on the television to find out how to lose weight. British TV is saturated with weight loss and diet shows. By now we all know the difference between healthy and fatty foods - is it green or is it deep-fried?
I don’t buy the excuse that healthy foods are expensive. Cook from scratch and don’t become a lazy Mc Donald’s person raising your kids as fat blobs who are more accustomed to the sofa than the garden. Now we might all have to pay more for junk food with ‘fat tax’.
Why should I pay for the greediness of a few?

YES
LATISHA MA
For too many overweight people, comfort eating has become a habit, and that habit has become an addiction.
Addictions are indirect emotional expressions, for those who are unable to express anger, fear, or sadness for example.
Nobody has the right to judge someone for how they deal with their emotions.
It is of course unhealthy to be obese, but health is not always at the forefront of someone’s mind when they practise self-sabotage. For some, it is also a case of being uneducated about diet. If they have been brought up in an environment where unhealthy food was the norm, they therefore have not had the tools to encourage weight loss and healthy living. Some physical conditions such as thyroids can cause obesity; surely these people have a good enough ‘excuse’?
There’s a lot of stigma and blame attached to being obese. However, being severely underweight is just as unhealthy.
The idea of there being ‘no excuse for being underweight’ is never brought up. Is this just about society being critical of those who do not conform to the physical ‘norm’?
Some people have personal reasons for being obese.
Many may not agree with those reasons or understand them, but they don’t really need to, and they most certainly have no right to judge.
Some foods have been proven to have addictive ingredients, and with all the advertising out there that seems to promote unhealthy eating, how are people meant to freely fight obesity whilst constantly being reminded of fatty meals?
You rarely see TV adverts for salads, but you do see them for companies such as Pizza Hut or McDonalds.
Yes, some people can resist these temptations. However, for others, this sabotages their efforts to adopt healthier lifestyles.
To say there is no excuse for being obese or having a food addiction is insensitive and lacks any form of understanding.

CommentsUnnecessary and irregular
Unnecessary and irregular eating habits causes obesity. Sometimes insufficient sleep also affects on health. To overcome obesity I thinks proper diet and exercise both are very important factors. Dietician can give actual advice to control obesity.

Is there an excuse for obesity
One in 4 people in the UK is obese. This number is rising and true, each grown individual is responsible for their food intake. It is a sad state of affairs when millions of dollars are being spent each year to combat obesity. The obesity epidemic IS of serious concern. GET SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH IN GENERAL WHETHER YOU ARE OBESED OR NOT.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SUBSTITUTING "BAD" FOOD CHOICE FOR "GOOD" FOOD CHOICE. Switch from white bread to wholegrain bread, whole milk for skim or 1% milk, etc. Fall in love with vegetables and use them in your meals as a salad or soup, etc. LIMIT YOUR PORTIONS. WATCH YOU FAT INTAKE. MOVE MORE IF YOU DON'T EXERCISE WHICH YOU SHOULD. WHEN YOU HAVE A CRAVING, WAIT 10 MINUTES AND THE CRAVING USUALLY WILL GO AWAY UNLESS YOU ARE GENUINELY HUNGRY. LEARN BETTER EATING HABITS BY READING LABELS. ANYTHING WITH 3 OR MORE INGREDIENTS IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU, WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS OF COURSE. YOU NEED TO BURN THE CALORIES YOU EAT, PLUS WORK AT REDUCING THE CALORIES YOU ARE ALREADY CARRYING.
I chew sugarless gum when I crave something sweet. Try frozen grapes they are like cold candy. Milk and all dairy products (unless fat free) is fattening. I use a sugar substitute, splenda to sweeten my teas. I only drink natural juices like orange juice, apple juice, etc. I don't bring any unhealthy food items home. Spend more time outdoor when you can and less time in front of the TV. MY FAVOURITE FOODS CHOCOLATE, CHEESE AND ICE CREAM ARE ABSOLUTELY OFF LIMITS FOR ME.
I hope these tips can be helpful to you.
So having read this, firstly
So having read this, firstly I’m shocked at peoples over reaction towards what is merely a matter of opinion. A debate on social aspects does not need to result in name calling, these people clearly lack capacity to offer a valid objection. Anyway my opinion - It’s hard to generalise a complex issue in such a short space, there are many factors here. I agree with you in some sense, (I think you loose support when you stereotype that obese people will become scroungers off the state) but overall will a course of tough love help obese people? Like any addiction the desire to quit needs to come from a self realisation and not for others be it loved ones or to stop costing the NHS money. (Would a drug addicted quit if they were told that they were funding criminal activity that could include prostitution or murder?) The difference here is that eating disorders do not have the same chemical reliance that other addictions such as drugs or alcohol have and that any change in lifestyle can be obtained solely through will power. The point of expensive healthy foods is interesting, I live in the centre of town where I am a stones throw from 30+ takeaways and numerous bars and restaurants yet there are not a butchers or green grocers in sight. If I want to buy veg from the local shops I have to buy them in packs of at least three, which is not only expensive but results in a waste of food. Also the way that junk food is advertised is disgusting and should be looked into. Education from television can not be fairly judged as their objective is to gain viewing figures through being shocking or (somehow) entertaining, I don’t think education comes into it. Overall I agree that people are responsible for there own lifestyles and cannot use ignorance or laziness as an excuse for their choices. But as to how to ‘cure’ or ‘limit’ obesity is beyond me, there are to many factors and therefore one or two approaches will not assist in the vast numbers of cases. Steps can be taken to cut back but as always people look for the quick fix. This problem has been growing for decades and is likely to take decades until results of actions are seen.
when a fat person takes up
when a fat person takes up two seats on the train it pi**es me off. Why should others have to make way for someone who has clearly no disregard for their own wellbeing. Agreed there are people who suffer from illnesses that makes their metabolism slower than your average joe, but you find that those people use their illness as an excuse to eat more, "it's because I have PCO" NO you eat twice as much as I do.
Its people like you that
Its people like you that cause eating disorders to begin....

I agree that the argument by Krystina is quite offensive; it's also poorly written. I found four grammatical errors and I don't know what 'a 'McDonalds' person' means? Fat blobs? Hmm...
This gave Krystina the
This gave Krystina the perfect opportunity to be a complete b***h and and show her complete contempt for anyone overweight I actually found her argument quite offensive tbh and I'm not overweight! Ms Ma gave a more balanced argument - well I think so. Yes people do need to take responsibility about their health and weight issues but it's not a one pill, diet etc cures all as she seems to think, it's all about contiuning education and changing lifelong bad habits and that certainly doesn't happen overnight. It's not every overweight person sits at home stuffing their faces with junk food in front of the tv as she seems to think, my best friend is curvy and a lot healthier than me, but she has a thyroid problem which she has medication for so if I was you Krystina, don't be so quick to judge on appearance alone! God don't like ugly......

Pavarotti died of pancreatic cancer, which has a well established link to obesity.
Barry White died of renal failure after kidney failure. He had kidney failure as a result of high blood pressure because he was clinically obese.
This debate is not a platform to 'learn' from but a platform to express opnions.
Krystina
Ignorance?
"For some, it is also a case of being uneducated about diet" - people can't still try and claim this after all the help they've been given, surely?! From the countless TV pieces explaining dieting, to things as simple as having the nutrition information being printed on food packaging, (often directly on the front of the packet in plain sight and with colour coding!)There are by far enough resources available to help even the most ignorant, regardless of their background.
I think people are lying when they claim they don't understand how to eat healthy - the bottom line is, cut out fats, keep to the recommended number of calories a day, with a small level of exercise thrown in for good measure and you won't have a problem. People who say, "I just don't understand why I'm fat?!" need to take a few precious moments of self reflection and they'll soon realise.
Why do both sides of your so
Why do both sides of your so called "360" arguments always come ascross as uninformed, bigoted, and stereotypical?
I don't know if this is your intention, or if just happens because thats how you formulate your arguments.
The fact is there have always been fat people, Winston Churchill was fat, Pavarotti was fat, Barry White was fat, and many more. And no, they didnt all drop dead from fatness as your stereotypical opinions suggest, Churchill died at 90.
If you want to help people who are over weight, then blog about your opinion on the best exercises, or do you even know what the best exercises are?
This argument or debate as you call it won't help cut obesity, its just a chance for two female reporters to have a chance to show off for not being overweight, as if that is all that really matters at the end of the day.
There isnt much anyone could learn from this debate, its hollow and one dimensional.
Well said.
Well said.
Krystina has made such a
Krystina has made such a sweeping statement "to be obese is to be selfish". So that one woman on the Tube represents every overweight person in the UK? In the world? Give me a break.
i agree with Krystina. People
i agree with Krystina. People who have weight problem (over or under weight) need to take responsibility to keep healthy. There is nothing wrong with eating a lot, but balance that with going to the gym, swimming, or even just walking a lot.
Don't use 'addiction' and 'emotions' as scapegoats. There is no excuse.
Obese people need incentives not pity
On weight-loss programmes we are often presented with images of teary-eyed participants professing the difficulty of losing weight. It is tough, and over-eating for overweight people often derives from bullying endured for looking fat. Bullying someone because of their weight is unforgivable. However, overweight people do not get the message to shed pounds through pity and agreement of how hard it is.
Without straight talking people will always find excuses for not doing the required excercise or healthy eating to keep themselves trim. Health is one of the best incentives: essentially, if you don't cut down the over-eating, your life will be the thing getting cut.
The will-power of the nation is dwindling.
Where I agree obesity is a result of poor decision making rather 'genetic pre-disposition' or 'indirect emotional expressions', it is still something that many people struggle with. The will-power of the nation is dwindling.
I don't agree with insulting people who suffer with their weight and calling them 'fat blobs', but we are all responsible for making decisions that overcome our cravings. Most of it is common sense and I think as such a spoilt nation, we have forgotten to instill a little restraint in ourselves. And yes if food has known addictive properties, you should do two things - Stop eating it, and get help for your 'addiction'. Much like we don't make excuses for smokers or heavy drinkers, it's a 'decision' not an 'excuse'.
obesity is a sad condition,
obesity is a sad condition, and those who are obese- have to take responsibility, but there is no need to be mean and refer to children (who don't yet control their diet) as 'fat blobs'. Some people do not know how to control what they put in their mouths. When your weight threatens your life it is a serious thing and must be addressed, but I like Latisha's view of obesity from a new angle.
It is interesting that
It is interesting that Latisha points out that underweight people with eating disorders are treated differently from overweight people with eating disorders. I have noticed this too.
Someone who is anorexic is more often seen as 'suffering from mental illness' and 'in need of help/support' to become healthy- whereas obese people are simply deemed 'lazy' or 'ignorant'.
Nobody is perfect and change is difficult. One thing is for sure, people need encouragement, support and positivity if they are to make improvements to their life. We need to stop being spiteful towards people with weight issues.
yeah I am sick of seeing
yeah I am sick of seeing people struggling with weight on public transport too.
World government's are not
World government's are not concerned about people's health but rather preparing them for the coming food rations.
Welcome to the New Middle Age!
excuse for obesity?
I would probably come down on the side of Ms Ma. Lifestyles of today don't always accommodate for time to cook the healthier option over a 5 minuet microwave wonder. A takeaway can also seem like the easier option after an excessively long day when the idea of cooking is beyond most.
Obesity can also be linked to medical conditions such as depression or an abnormalities with the Thyroid gland.
All in all I would say it would be unfair to condemn anyone of any shape or size without prior knowledge of what they have been or are going through.
OBESITY
i agree with krystina, people are far too complacent about blaming others and society for everything these cdays instaed of taking rtesponsibility for their own actions. they say they cant afford healthy food but still buy junk food at every meal acros a 7 day week-the same cost as buying a healthy weekly fresh food shop. these people are burdening us of our taxes and putting crazy strain on our NHS.
