Thompson and Ta Lou head to Glasgow

SWEET T: Ta Lou set for Glasgow race

DOUBLE OLYMPIC champion Elaine Thompson and double world silver medallist Marie-Josée Ta Lou have been confirmed as part of an all-star 60m field at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow later this month.

Ranked as the number one indoor athletics meeting in the world, the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow looks set to continue living up to its billing, with the women’s 60m on February 25 expected to be the blue riband event as Thompson and Ta Lou join the already confi rmed Dina Asher-Smith and Dafne Schippers.

STRONG

Thompson, who became the first ever female Jamaican to win the 100m and 200m at the Olympic Games in 2016, has been added to the already stellar line up, and will be intent on a strong start to 2018 following a shock fifth place finish over 100m at 2017’s IAAF World Championships in London.

Ivorian sprinter Ta Lou however enjoyed a double podium breakthrough at London 2017, claiming silver medals in both the 100m and 200m, and is sure to push Thompson, Schippers and Asher-Smith all the way in Glasgow on February 25.

READY: Jamaican great Elaine Thompson

Looking ahead to the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow, reigning double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson said: “I am really looking forward to returning to compete in the UK, and hopefully will be able to produce a strong performance in Glasgow.

“Women’s sprinting is hugely competitive, as we saw in London last year, and when you take into account the skill of starting quickly, the 60m is really an event in which a lot of girls have the opportunity to shine and take the win. I have no doubt that we will see some incredible performances over 60m at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow.”

After breaking into the podium places in fine style at London 2017, Ta Lou shared her excitement for the event in Glasgow: “2017 was unbelievable for me, but aside from anything else it left me hungry for more success. I have now sampled what it is like to compete in the UK many times, and I can’t wait to come to Glasgow in only a month’s time and compete at the world’s best indoor athletics meet.

PERFORMANCES

“2018 is another exciting year for athletics and for me personally – in Glasgow I really hope to capitalise on my performances at London 2017 against the tough competition I face in the likes of Elaine (Thompson), Dafne (Schippers) and Dina (AsherSmith).

Chief Executive of UK Athletics, Niels de Vos said: “We are in for a real treat at this year’s Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow – the women’s 60m fi eld we have assembled will not be topped anywhere in the world this indoor season.

“Not only will the home crowd be treated to seeing Britain’s fastest ever 100m and 200m sprinter in Dina Asher-Smith, but now with the likes of Elaine and Marie-Josee on board to join Dafne Schippers too, we are sure to see incredible races and fast times in Glasgow."

Supported by EventScotland, part of Visit Scotland’s Events Directorate, the Müller Grand Prix Glasgow is the final of the prestigious IAAF World Indoor Tour, with wildcards for the IAAF World Indoor Championships available to athletes who have not already qualified to compete for their nation.
