Tirunesh Dibaba takes year out for baby

TIME OUT: Tirunesh Dibaba

OLYMPIC CHAMPION Tirunesh Dibaba is set to miss the 2015 athletics season due to pregnancy.

The diminutive Ethiopian distance runner, nicknamed the ‘baby faced assassin’, will not defend the 10,000m title she won at the 2013 World Championships when the competition takes place in Beijing next year as she is due to give birth in the summer.

Dibaba’s absence will be great news for her peers and rivals as the 29-year-old is a respected force on the distance circuit.

Earlier this year Dibaba finished third on her marathon debut in London, clocking 2:20:34 behind unrelated Kenyan’s Edna and Florence Kiplagat.

Two-time Olympic silver medallist and husband of Dibaba, Sileshi Sihine, said the couple were looking forward to a new addition to the family.

“We decided this is the best time for her since she will have a chance to comeback at the 2016 Olympics at the earliest or to prepare for her career as a marathoner. Her great Kenyan friend Vivian (Cheruiyot) should be coming back next season after taking her break and now is her turn,"
