Townsend’s World Cup dream in danger after injury

INJURED: Townsend comes off injued (PA)

ENGLAND ACE Andros Townsend could see his World Cup hopes cruelly dashed after he sustained an ankle injury during Tottenham’s league win over Stoke.

The 22-year-old Spurs winger is set to undergo further assessments today (Apr 29) to determine the extent of the damage before it is known whether he will be able to recover in time to make Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for the Finals in Brazil this summer.

Townsend picked up the knock after coming on as a substitute 12 minutes before the final whistle as Spurs beat the Potters 1-0 on Saturday (Apr 26).

It would be cruel on the wideman if he were to miss out on the World Cup following his eye-catching contribution during the qualification stages last year when he scored on his England debut against Montenegro and starred in the Three Lions’ win over Poland.

However, despite a bright start to this season, his form has dipped in recent months and he last started a game for Tottenham when they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal in March.
