Train kills man after police chase

A MAN who was being pursued by police in northwest London has died after being hit by a train.

Metropolitan Police confirmed the death of the man believed to be in his 20s – officers stopped him yesterday (November 12) at 4.25pm in Christchurch Avenue under suspicion of drug possession.

He then ran away from the two officers, who both followed him on foot, the force said, and he was “pursued and observed from a distance for around 40 minutes” in a chase supported by a helicopter and dog unit.

The man was seen climbing over fences and at about 5.12pm he crossed a railway track and was hit by a train near Dartmouth Road, Willesden.

Ambulances arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification and a post-mortem are set to take place in due course.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed about the death and is investigating the incident.
