Trayvon Martin death: Zimmerman claims self-defence

THE MAN who shot and killed black teenager, Trayvon Martin, has allegedly claimed that he was attacked first.

George Zimmerman, who is of white and hispanic heratige, told Florida police that the 17-year-old had punched him in the face, climbed on top of him and slammed his head into the sidewalk, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Zimmerman, also claimed the teen was acting 'suspicious' and he later shot him in self-defence after the confrontation in the Sanford, Florida, gated community on Feb 26.

According to authorities, the self-styled watchmen had been found with a bloody nose, swollen lip and lacerations in the back of his head.

Zimmerman has not been arrested on based on the State’s ‘stand your ground’ laws, which protects those who kill in self-defence.

An online petition urging local authorities to prosecute him has meanwhile drawn more than 2 million signatures at website Change.org. While a number of celebrities have also joined in the campaign for justice.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the American Embassy in central London this Saturday to protest Trayvon's killing.
