Trevor Noah faces boycott calls over racist joke

BOYCOTT: An old clip of Trevor Noah performing a racist joke has sparked outrage

COMEDIAN TREVOR Noah is under fire after a video clip of is comedy routine in which he made racist comments surfaced.

In the five year old clip, The Guardian reported that Noah said: “All women of every race can be beautiful.

“And I know some of you are sitting there now going, ‘Oh Trevor ... I’ve never seen a beautiful Aborigine.’ But you know what you say? You say, ‘Yet.’ Because you haven’t seen all of them, right?

“Plus it’s not always about looks, maybe Aborigine women do special things, maybe they’ll just like, jump on top of you.”

The clip received renewed attention after it was posted by former rugby player and aboriginal education worker Joe Williams.

“Hey Trevor Noah, your comments about Aboriginal @IndigenousX in this clip are utterly unacceptable! As a man of colour, you are usually in point with racism and divide - here you are perpetrating & encouraging racial abuse!!” tweeted Williams.

Williams ended the tweet with the hashtag “boycott Trevor Noah in Oz”. The Daily Show host is due to tour in Australia next month.

Noah responded to Williams’ comments and said he had made a promise not to make a joke like the one in the clip again.

“You're right. After visiting Australia's Bunjilaka museum and learning about aboriginal history first hand I vowed never to make a joke like that again. And I haven't. I'll make sure the clip from 2013 is not promoted in any way,” Noah tweeted.

Many Twitter users were unimpressed by Noah’s reaction. One said: “Seriously, is that your apology? How about having that video removed?”

The video now appears to have been taken down from YouTube. The site now shows the message: “Trevor Noah - Women of…” This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by David Meyer” when an attempt to access it is made.
