A GLITTERING tribute night to legendary Sheffield trained boxer Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham is to be held next month as he fights back from a serious health scare.
The black tie event at Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham, includes a three course dinner, entertainment from comedian Billy Pearce, a disco, plus many more surprises.
Around 35 boxing champions, past and present, will help raise money for Graham who is recuperating in a London hospital from a burst appendix.
The ‘card’ for the May 7 event includes Kell Brook, Clinton Woods, Junior Witter, Johnny Nelson, Paul ‘Silky’ Jones, Ryan Rhodes, Esham Pickering, Glyn Rhodes, Adam Etches, Jon Keeton, Ross Burkinshaw and Nav Mansouri.
The former middleweight was rushed to hospital last month for a burst appendix but suffered complications. Now on the road to recovery, Graham was thrilled to be visited by a procession of boxing legends, including Frank Bruno and Colin McMillan.
JUST CHAMPION: Graham during his glory days
Event organiser Michael Lawless said Graham, who has previously suffered with depression, was using the tribute night as a “motivation” to get better.
“Herol was taken aback by the number of people who have sent good-will messages” he said. “The evening has given him something positive to focus on and aid his recovery. It was touch-and-go for him for a while, but he has pulled through.
“The event is about celebrating his great contribution to boxing and to assist him with his recuperation on the road to a full recovery. The local boxing community in and around Sheffield were all praying for him.”
Graham, who now lives in Muswell Hill with his partner Karen, was one of the world’s best boxers in 1980s -1990s, possibly the best British boxer never to have won a world title. He won British, Commonwealth and European titles, going 38 fights unbeaten between 1978 and 1987. He retired in 1998, and now trains young boxers and runs fitness classes.
